Three unnamed government sources told local media on Thursday that an explosion at a training center in southern Russia killed at least 12 soldiers and injured eight more.
The troops were killed in an explosion on November 3 at the Kuzmin military training ground in the Rostov region, Russia’s Investigative Committee is currently looking into the incident.
“During their lunch break, about 20 marines lit a fire next to some ammunition.” “An RPG-7 grenade launcher shell rolled into the fire and went off,” a government source told.
Four of the troops who died were said to have lived through the first blast but later died in the hospital from their injuries.
The Russian Defense Ministry and the Investigative Committee have not said anything about the alleged explosion.
Navy soldiers from Primorye in Russia’s Far East were said to have been all of those killed.
The leaders of Russia’s Pacific Fleet went to the Kuzmin military training ground after the deadly explosion, according to one source from 161.ru. The exact reason for their visit was not given.
The area of Rostov is next to Ukraine, and its capital, Rostov-on-Don, is where the war in Ukraine is run.
