BENGALURU: According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), a record 1.25 million fans attended matches during the 13th edition of the World Cup, which concluded on Sunday with Australia winning their sixth title by defeating the hosts, India. The tournament reached its conclusion with Australia’s victory.
From the stands, a total of 1,250,307 fans witnessed the showcase event that took place from October 5th to November 19th. This figure surpasses the previous record of 1.016 million fans, which was established during the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand.
In spite of the fact that the early matches that did not involve India, the runners-up, had a significant number of vacant seats in venues, the total number of spectators present had already topped one million with six games remaining.
Chris Tetley, who is the Head of Events for the International Cricket Council, stated that the one-day international competition was a “great success.”
“The staggering attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of cricket and the excitement the ODI format continues to offer,” Tetley said in a statement. He also added that the event shattered various broadcast and digital viewership records. “The ODI format continues to offer excitement,” Tetley said.
“Not only has it been an event that has entertained cricket fans all over the world, but it has also brought them together in a festive celebration of the sport.”
